Cicadas are Here! BEI can Help Clean Up Fast!
After months of anticipation, cicadas have burst out in massive numbers across Illinois. These amazing creatures have been underground since 2007 and are now making their grand appearance.
They Are Here!
Cicadas are incredible insects that spend over 99% of their existence underground, emerging as adults for just a few weeks every 13 or 17 years. During this short time, they molt, reproduce, lay eggs, and then die. Expect to see juvenile cicadas popping out of their holes and shedding their exoskeletons on blades of grass, trees, plant stems—any surface the cicadas could cling to during molting. The new adults need time to adjust to life above ground. Once their bodies harden and their wings fully develop, they’ll head up into the trees. Males will start their mating calls in about four or five days, so expect the noise level to rise soon!
Our Trees Are Ready
Healthy, mature trees and shrubs can handle the cicada emergence. Balanced Environments, Inc. ensures our installations use trees that are 3 inches or larger and shrubs that are 3 gallons or larger, so there’s no need to worry about your landscaping. Travis Glay from BEI’s Tree Management Department reassures: “The trees and shrubs BEI has planted and maintain on your properties are mature and safe, and will weather this cicada summer with ease.”
Call BEI today for Quick Clean up
BEI can promptly clean up dead cicadas to prevent standing water puddles that attract mosquitoes.
Remember, cicadas won’t be everywhere. Heavily developed areas and places without trees won’t see as many. Cicadas will be around only for a few weeks after emergence.
